About
Dr. Amanda McLeroy
Amanda McLeroy was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and recently located to Rochester, New York. In 2022, Dr. McLeroy earned a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Counseling and Rehabilitation Counselor Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Additionally, she holds an M.S. in Clinical and Mental Health Counseling from Columbus State University and a B.S. in Psychology from George Mason University. Dr. McLeroy is currently an Assistant Professor in the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. She also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Online Counseling Program at the College of William & Mary.
Dr. McLeroy also has a wide range of teaching and clinical experience. She is a licensed clinical mental health counselor associate in North Carolina, a nationally certified counselor, and a telemental health provider with over five years of experience working with clients in educational and community-based settings, correctional facilities, and private practice. Before joining the Warner School, Dr. McLeroy spent two and half years writing grant proposals and publications focused on improving recruitment and retention in STEM majors and careers among Black adolescents. She advocated for more inclusive and hands-on summer STEM learning experiences for high school girls from impoverished areas, recognizing that these opportunities are otherwise inaccessible to this population.
Dr. McLeroy’s primary research interests include childhood and racial trauma, caregivers of individuals with disabilities, and multicultural issues affecting underserved and underrepresented populations. Her current work concerns Black adolescents' experiences of police brutality exposure via social media
